Now the CFP Matchups are set…

  • Texas vs. Washington
  • Michigan vs. Alabama

Did Florida State get screwed? I don’t think so, it was just a sh**ty situation in a year where we had 3 power 5 conference undefeated champions, and a strong 1 loss league champ in the SEC and Big 12, who just happened to play each other, and the Big 12 champ won head to head. Should the SEC have been left out? Did FSU deserve it over Washington or Michigan?

Arguments can be made, what I’d focus on is why are we still in a 4 team playoff when every other level of college football is a 16-team affair. We are here because the college presidents, ADs, and the NCAA had historically outsourced its D1 football title to bowl games, and they’re now pulling that back. So yes, Florida State didn’t get a fair shake and the answer is to accelerate the larger playoff format ASAP.

As for the matchups, I’ll touch on those in a future episode, but high-level — Texas and Washington is a good matchup; this should be a tight game. I don’t know who I like better but this is a matchup that I’ll be watching with keen interest. A ton of NFL talent. The other game could be great, and I’ll be rooting for the Big 10 to break through vs. the SEC, mostly b/c I’d like to see a new conference win the title, but let’s be honest here, Alabama looks great; they soundly beat Georgia, who in my estimation is a top 4 team this year, if not top 2. So this could be a lopsided affair, though I hope I’m wrong.

2023 College Fantasy All-American Teams

These are the players who made college fantasy football championships this year.

College Fantasy MVP — QB Jayden Daniels

1st Team

  • QB — Jayden Daniels — LSU/SR (42 PPG) — To say this guy was good this year is a gross understatement. He averaged nearly 9 PPG more than any other college player. This was akin to the Lamar Jackson advantage from 7 years ago.
  • RB — Ra’Mahn Davis — UK/SR (22 PPG) — This guy scored 20 TD’s, was heavily involved as a receiver, and was the clear #1 college fantasy back this year.
  • RB — Omarion Hampton — UNC/SOPH (22 PPG) — A universally undrafted player (11% of leagues was he drafted), Hampton went on to become a critical college fantasy piece!
  • WR — Malik Nabers — LSU/JR (23 PPG) — Nabers benefitted from Daniels exploding this season. He’s a top 15 NFL prospect, and he showed that talent this year as the top college fantasy performer!
  • WR — Rome Odunze — UW/JR (21 PPG) — A pro prospect and likely top 10 pick, paired well w/ Penix, to have a huge season.
  • TE — Brock Bowers — UGA/JR (14 PPG) — Bowers is a clear NFL top prospect but also is a clear sign of how much a gap the best college fantasy tight end contributes vs. a top QB, RB or WR. He scored 4 PPG more than the 2nd best tight end, and he was nearly 8 points below the top RB & WR’s.
  • K — Bret Auburn — UT/JR (12 PPG) — Auburn scored more than 2 PPG than the next kicker, he was an advantage for all those that had him in their starting kicker spot.

2nd Team

  • QB — Dillon Gabriel — OKLA/SR (34 PPG) — This was close with Bo Nix but Gabriel got it as a result of being more prolific. He scored more than 1 PPG than any other player not named Jayden Daniels.
  • RB — Blake Corum — MICH/SR (21 PPG) — The preseason all American lived up to the hype but he was held off the 1st team by being paired with another excellent NFL prospect in Donovan Edwards.
  • RB — Audric Estime — ND/JR (22 PPG) — Estime was the ND ground game and is likely the top pro prospect.
  • WR — Troy Franklin — ORE/JR (20 PPG) — Franklin was Oregon’s best offensive weapon and Nix’ big play threat. Franklin likely leaves for the NFL this year but if he doesn’t he’ll be a top fantasys tarter.
  • WR — Malik Washington — UVA/SR (20 PPG) — Washington was a shock to the entire fantasy system; being drafted in 0% of leagues, he was indeed a waiver-wire gem.
  • TE — Cade Stover — OHST/Sr. (10 PPG) — Stover is another in a long line of productive Buckeye tight ends. Iowa, Notre Dame and Stanford among others always get the pub for NFL tight end prospects, but Ohio State actually delivers productivity season and season.
  • K — Randy Bond — TA&M/Sr. (11 PPG) — Texas A&M had a productive offense but one that stalled too frequently in the red zone, resulting in Bond being a good fantasy producer, being more than 1 PPG better than any other kicker not named Bret Auburn.
