What did we learn from week 5 of the 2023 college football season?
I stand by comments from last week — there isn’t any clearly dominant, sure fire championship team. It’s truly wide open. Georgia (#1) has to be the favorite given they’ve won the past 2 and remain unbeaten but they certainly aren’t the same as last year. Michigan (#2) is sound but are they good enough to beat Georgia or Texas?
Texas (#3) maybe the most impressive team so far, winning all 5 of it’s games convincingly, including Alabama.
Ohio state (#4) hasn’t had a sound, championship level beat down yet but they’ve survived tough games vs. Notre Dame among others.
Florida State (#5) has played well soundly beating LSU and sneaking by Clemson but are they great teams?
Penn State (#6), Washington (#7), Oregon (#8) and USC (#9) all are unbeaten and have shown the talent to be in the mix. Notre Dame and Alabama are still in the mix with 1 losses but none of these teams are perfect, and we’re in for a wild October and November!
I’m excited for next weekend’s Oklahoma (#12) vs. Texas (#3) matchup. The winner will solidify their position as a major title contender. If Texas wins soundly they should jump Michigan.
I also am excited to see how the unbeaten Kentucky team plays on the road vs. Georgia. There are only 2 other matchups among 2 ranked teams.
Notre Dame (#10) vs. Louisville (#25) and LSU (#23) vs. Mizzu (#21)
As we get into an all conference tilt in early October, the quality of the matchups and the results will give us a clearer picture on who is real and who isn’t.
Top College Fantasy Football Free Agent Targets
QB Brady Cook - (Mizzu; 20% owned) — If you’re looking for a surprise riser, look at the Mizzou junior, he’s coming off a hot 4 TD game vs. Vandy. He plays LSU this week, which usually would mean do not start but this is a LSU pass defense that has been easy to throw on.
RB Tyrone Tracy Jr. (Purdue; 11% owned) Tracy was on this list last week, he went out and had his first 100 yard game of the season and appears to be one of Purdue’s core offensive weapons now. Pick him up quickly before the news is out.
RB Bhayshul Tuten (Va Tech; 20% owned) — Tuen stepped up and exceed 100 yards, throwing in another 4 catches and 40 yards plus a TD through the air vs. Pitt. He’s had successive growth in touches and appears to be emerging as a fixture in their offense.
WR Lewis Bond (BC; 6% owned) — Bond, a Sophomore, has upped his production each week but consistently been a scorer (he’s scored in 4 of 5 games this year, 5 total TD’s), he’s the primary receiving threats for the BC Eagles. But he’s available in virutally every league out there.
WR Silas Bolden (Oregon State; 7% owned). Bolden is younger brother of a former Beaver receiver, this junior though maybe stepping up in an offense that is quietly very good. Before people realize Bolden’s production pick him up.
TE/WR Michael Harrison (CU; 38% owned) — Colorado buff has unique value due to the TE/WR designation. He also has gotten more targets in 5 consecutive weeks; and he’s now the #2 overall college fantasy producer.
