College Fantasy Football: Week 5 Waiver Wire Targets and Title Favorites (Oregon?)
_Episode 37 of the Fantasy Sports Collective Podcast covers week five of college fantasy football waiver wire targets…_share.transistor.fm
First what did we learn from games this weekend?
Pac-12 remains arguably the toughest conference. USC, Washington, Oregon, Utah are all solid top 10 stalwarts, and Washington State, Oregon State, Colorado and UCLA are tough matchups.
Oregon maybe much better than we’ve given them credit for. This maybe their strongest squad ever. Look at their games. They blew out Portland State 81–7, Hawaii (55–10), won soundly though the final score doesn’t say it on the road in Lubbock (38–30 vs. Texas tech) and then blew out Colorado (42–6) at home this past weekend.
Colorado — we’ll know a lot more this Saturday about them and USC. It’s likely SC’s talent is too much for the Buffs but if it’s a close game it means the class of the Pac 12 is in Eugene.
USC — they simply have the best skill position offensive talent in the nation. They have at least a handful of NFL wide receivers, a few NFL level db’s, the best QB in the country, and a 5 star true freshman behind him. They are deep and it’ll be hard to outscore them.
SEC — Is this a down year for the conference? It sure appears so. Alabama has struggled (for them) but they took on a potential roadblock in Lane Kiffin’s Ole Miss this weekend and gave them an old ground game whipping. Mama isn’t a national championship contender, they don’t have the difference makers on offense and lack cohesion at QB, but it was telling that Ole Miss couldn’t muster more of a competitive effort.
It seems like it’s Georgia or bust for the south eastern conference this season.
ACC — The conference breakouts this year are down to the Florida schools. Miami and Duke are both 4–0, playing okay schedules, so there is more to learn there. But Florida State may be underrated as they went into Clemson to win, in what may be the most challenging game left on their respective schedule.
Big 10 has 3 top-ten teams — Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State. Ohio State’s QB transition has been challenging. That said they continue to find ways to win, I’ll be curious to see if they can figure this out by the time they play Penn State and Michigan.
Those teams all play each other, and beyond them there are no other top-25 teams — and the conference maybe very top-heavy this year. All three schools have a legitimate chance of being in the national championship potential.
Big 12 — Texas is leading the charge in their last year in the conference. They’ve got their signature win (Bama), and will face off against Oklahoma shortly. They’ll be in the national championship mix if they can navigate their conference and survive their conference title game.
Top College Fantasy Football Free Agent Targets
QB Haynes King — (33% owned) Georgia Tech sophomore signal caller is owned by 20% of leagues, and he’s had back to back big games.
QB Jack Plummer — (23% owned) Louisville senior QB has been hot. He’s averaging 25.77 points per game, top 20 fantasy QB available in majority of leagues.
RB Cameron Skattebo (AZState) — (32% owned) He had a breakout game vs. USC scoring 39 fantasy points. He’d been a regular though so this could sustain, playing Cal this week. Good potential fit.
RB Jamal Haynes (Georgia Tech) — (11% owned) He’s been heavily involved in both the run and pass game, he had a big game vs. Wake. He’s worth an add as a RB3/Flex starter with some upside.
RB Tyrone Tracy Jr. (Purdue) — (7% owned) Tracy is a plodder who has gotten a few catches but he’s a short yardage guy with 4 TD’s so far. If he could carve out a larger role he would be a must start.
WR Lideatrick Griffin (Miss State) — (10% owned) He had a huge week 4 with 7 for 256 and a TD, but he’s a 6+ targets the past 3 weeks, and he did this against South Carolina. So he’s worth putting on your roster.
WR’s Josh Kelly & Kyle Williams (Wash State) (14% & 12% owned respectively). Let’s call it the backwoods of college football effect but two of Washington State’s starting WR’s are owned by less than 14% of leagues. Both are getting a ton of targets and on pace to be top 35 college fantasy football receivers this year.
TE Luke Hasz (Arkansas) — (18% owned). Hasz has received consistent targets and currently is the number 1 fantasy scorer through 4 weeks (scoring 50 points total). He exploded for 118 yards & 2 td’s versus LSU.
