CPAFFL Podcast — Week 7

What did we learn this week in college football?

Well don’t go to bed early when Coach Prime’s Buffs play late. In a game they were up 29–0 at halftime versus the Stanford Cardinal, ended up in overtime loss to the rebuilding Cardinal team. Shadeur Sanders will take some heat this week for dropping merchandise promotional social media posts at halftime, but

Our living on the edge team, USC, finally succumbed to their uneven play and were blown out by Notre Dame. Yes ND has been good but don’t forget they were coming off a sound beating themselves by Louisville. SC still has a shot at the title but they need to run the table.

Who stood out in week 7?

  • University of Washington — Oregon lost this won with poor decisions but the Huskies are great, and in a battle of 2 awesome teams, the fact Washington won puts them in a great position to finish out as a top 4 team.
  • UNC — Nobody has been talking about Mack Brown & QB Drake Maye, but they’re now 6–0 after soundly beating Miami. They’ve got a surprisingly good Duke rivalry matchup coming up and Clemson at home, beyond that they could exit the regular season undefeated.

The remaining unbeatens

Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State, UW, Florida State, UNC, Penn State, Oklahoma & Air Force (for good measure).

Who is living on the edge? We called out USC last week, who is next?

  • Ohio State — Buckeyes remain unbeaten but they’ve looked mediocre in almost all their games before pulling away late. Will that cost them as they face Penn State & Michigan in coming weeks?
  • Alabama — they’re not winning like we’ve been accustomed to but they keep winning. That loss vs. Texas may still hold them back if they get tripped up, but for now they’re still in the mix. For now they’re finding ways but their overall teams performance is lacking, and the odds are high their string of winning close games won’t sustain as they get into the heart of their SEC schedule.

Who will win the title?

  • Georgia — they have the most talent and momentum. Their remaining schedule is reasonable, dare I say easy for the SEC, their only remaining ranked opponents are Tenn & Ole Miss. So we’re looking at a team that could slip up and still remain 11–1 and have the benefit of the doubt for the final 4 given their back to back title defense.

As we transition to college fantasy football, we’re getting to the stage of the year where the best free agent targets are emerging underclassmen, typically as a result of injury. So here we go.

Top College Fantasy Football Free Agent Targets Week 7

  • QB Graham Mertz — (Florida; 14% owned) — The former Wisconsin starter has settled in as a consistent performer (#23 overall fantasy QB through 7 weeks) who is available in a ton of leagues.
  • QB Kyron Drones (VA Tech; 7% owned) — Drones is putting up great dual threat numbers in relative obscruity, but don’t let that fool you. He’s worthy of being in any super flex flineup of leagues bigger than 12, and a great bye week fill in.
  • RB Jonah Coleman (ARI; 14% owned) — Coleman has come on strong the last few weeks as Arizona as a team has found some identity and played great football (nearly upset USC, then soundly beat Washington State). Coleman is a big part of that as a versatile back who plays in the pass game.
  • RB Bhayshul Tuten (Va Tech; 23% owned) — Tuten had another 15 point fantasy week, he’s now the #14 overall fantasy college running back, and he remains available in nearly 77% of all leagues.
  • WR Silas Bolden (Oregon State; 27% owned). Bolden is younger brother of a former Beaver receiver, he’s continued to put up big numbers in the dynamic Oregon State offense.
  • WR Elic Ayomanor (Stanford; 3% owned) — Ayomanor nearly on his own upset Colorado on the road with a 13 catch, 295 yard & 3 TD performance. He did a lot of this damage against one of the best CB’s in college (Travis Hunter), so it’s real and Stanford should use it’s intellectually advantage to target him a TON going forward.
  • TE Jack Velling (Oregon State;19% owned) — I called out Velling last week and he responded with 83 yards & 2 TD’s in another victory for the Beavers. He’s now a top 3 college fantasy football tight end so far.
