What did we learn this week in college football?
The land of unbeatens and unblemished continue to dwindle. Oklahoma went down, and it appears Big 12 maybe cooked from the national title picture.
Which brings me to an interesting topic on whether Texas or Oklahoma can succeed in the SEC? Oklahoma under Lincoln Riley was fun to watch but they never really won the games that mattered. Texas hasn’t been relevant at the highest level since Mack Brown and his Colt McCoy team nearly 15 years ago.
My expectation is that unlike Texas A&M which struck lightning in a bottle when they entered the SEC with Johnny Manziel. Texas and Oklahoma will be competitive but they won’t be the class of the conference because the difference between Big 12 lower 50% and the Sec lower 50% is night and day. Oklahoma and Texas will add a few additional losses in their new conference, landing themselves more in the middle of the pack. Not horrendous but certainly not dominant.
Back to the National Title Debate — these are the remaining undefeated teams.
Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State, UW, Florida State, & Air Force (for good measure).
Who will win the title?
- I’m sticking with Georgia — they have the most talent and momentum. Their remaining schedule is reasonable, dare I say easy for the SEC, their only remaining ranked opponents are Tenn & Ole Miss. So we’re looking at a team that could slip up and still remain 11–1 and have the benefit of the doubt for the final 4 given their back to back title defense.
I think Michigan will eventually falter with all the pressure on them with outside noise from Jim Harbaugh’s transgressions. Ohio State is good but they have deficiencies in the run game and haven’t shown themselves yet to be a complete team. I’m intrigued by University of Washington and Florida State. UW in particular has played a great schedule and shown they’re up for the task — their only close contest being against Oregon, another fantastic top 10 team.
As we transition to college fantasy football, we’re getting to the stage of the year where the best free agent targets are emerging underclassmen, typically as a result of injury. So here we go.
Top College Fantasy Football Free Agent Targets
- QB Luke Atmyer — (Illinois; 12% owned; 20.2 PPG) — Atmyer is dynamic, he had 100 yard ground game and has been worth starting during bye weeks. #24th overall fantasy scorer through 8 weeks.
- QB Graham Mertz — (Florida; 15% owned; 20 PPG) — The former Wisconsin starter has settled in as a consistent performer (#25 overall fantasy QB through 7 weeks) who is available in a ton of leagues.
- RB Bhayshul Tuten (Va Tech; 24% owned; 15.1 PPG) — Tuten continues to be a productive fantasy back owned by a small percentage of overall leagues. The #18 overall fantasy college running back, he’s worth adding if you need depth or a spot starter.
- RB Kye Robichaux (BC; 18% owned; 15.45 PPG) — Robichaux is a quiet plodder, he’s not spectacular but he’s putting up consistent production.
- WR Daniel Jackson (MINN; 13% owned; 13 PPG) — Jackson has back to back 100 yard outings with 11+ targets, he’s become their primary receiver. Will he keep it up? My guess is yes b/c Minnesota has realized they need more balance in back to back wins.
- WR Drake Stoops (OKLA; 6% owned; 11.4PPG) — Stoops floor is high, he’s a senior in a dynamic offense but his ceiling is low relative to Jackson. So Stoops isn’t for everybody but if you need an injury or bye week filler, this is a top 40 fantasy receiver who will deliver some points for you.
- TE Arlis Boardingham (Oregon State; 31% owned) — I called out Velling the past two weeks, he had soft week 7 but he remains a heavy red zone target.
