David Johnson’s Backup Has Fantasy Value

The Arizona Cardinals selected a running back, Chase Edmonds in the 2018 NFL draft. Edmonds has the talent to carry the primary load, however he will compete to be the primary backup to all world David Johnson in the immediate future.

RB Chase Edmonds

  • Size: 5’9” / 209
  • Draft Selection: #134 (2018)
  • Depth Chart: RB2 (competing to back up David Johnson)
  • ’18 Outlook: RB Handcuff (RB2/Flex if David Johnson misses games)
  • Athletic Profile: Fine (thx2 PlayerProfiler.com)
  • Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chaseedmonds22/
  • NFL Comparison: Poor man’s Duke Johnson

Outlook: Edmonds is a fantasy sleeper (or deep sleeper in sub 10 team leagues) as the backup to David Johnson. He must beat out Elijah Penny and TJ Logan, however the primary backup in a new run-centric offensive system could be worth 5 to 10 touches a week, and if David Johnson misses any time, Edmonds would be inline for mid RB2 value.

Situation: Edmonds lands in a sneaky strong situation in Arizona. The Cardinals are breaking in a run-centric offensive system under new OC Mike McCoy. McCoy and team have stressed they want to implement a run to set up play action and complete high percentage plays to sustain drives. Edmonds skill set as a shifty runner and solid receiver complements David Johnson and the team’s offensive focus. If Johnson is 100% healthy, he will monopolize the backfield, coming off injury though could result in the Cardinals looking to minimize a heavy workload.

Long-term: David Johnson is a free agent at the conclusion of the 2018 season, however, the probability of resigning is high. Chase Edmonds is on the small size, NFL coaches may not ever see him more than a change of pace and/or 3rd down back, however with the NFL evolving in formations and usage, Edmonds could evolve into a 15+ touch role who is involved in the passing game. Given the opportunity, Edmonds has three down ability to be a primary starting running back.
