Pod #20 — Is College Football Doomed? NBA Bonanza…

Welcome to the 20th episode of the Fantasy Sports Collective Podcast hosted by JayDubb. This is a quick take on the College Football announcement by the Big 10, Pac 12, Ivy League, MAC & WAC conferences, and quick takes on the NBA bubble, NHL and MLB COVID-19 style.

My general take is I applaud the conferences that have pushed their fall sports to 2021. I hate that the pandemic is changing our world, I am not an extremist who believes we should change EVERYTHING but the reality is we don’t know enough to proceed with college football (without major concessions, health protocals and risks to not just student athletes but professors, staff, etc.). Any school proceeding forward with football sans other sports this fall, and students on campus are compromising their integrity, and ultimately aren’t institutions of higher learning but rather, businesses looking to maximize near term profit.

As Josh Kendall of the TheAthletic wrote today, Silence and lack of transparency from the SEC, ACC and Big 12 are signs they actually don’t know whether this is safe but they must proceed ahead due to the economics. Any debate on this opinion was put to rest when Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby said: “I have better information and our presidents have better information than most of our friends in the fourth estate.” while failing to disclose any of that information or the controls they would put in place to keep their student athletes safe.

My hope is some good comes from this for college football. Scholarships should be guaranteed, these players should have some control, they aren’t paid, so the scholarship should be guaranteed for four years, they should be able to transfer without sitting out at any time and there should be enhanced medical coverage, to account for the brutality of football. Nick Saban will hate this, today he has total control, he can kick a player off a scholarship for any reason and he can limit where that kid wants to transfer to. That is un-American.
